Selecting The Right Wood For Your Gate

When choosing a Stain Grade Wood Gate, there is a lot of care that goes into the wood selection process.

First of all, since the wood grain is going to show through the stain we select only the most perfect pieces of wood from our stock — we look for wood pieces that are free of dents and any other small imperfections that would take away from the beauty of the gate.

We examine the wood to make sure that the grain and color are consistent, along with the general curvature of the wood and the angle and width of the grain. While this careful wood selection process makes the gate building process slower, you end up with a vastly superior looking gate.

Also, the high quality Philippine Mahogany wood we use in our gates is not sold as “dimensional lumber” like the more inexpensive cedar and redwood materials. This means that we end up with a lot of random length left over pieces that cannot be used in other stain grade gates*.

* Don’t worry, we do our best to be eco-friendly and minimize the waste by recycling much of our unusable pieces with local restaurants that use the extra pieces in their wood burning stoves.
